The Invasion of the Black Mold in Your Home

You are not alone. Even if you are sitting by yourself as you read this, you are completely surrounded.

You could run outside to get away, but a silent intruder has already infiltrated your body.

In fact, it’s been there all along. You have been playing host to it since the day you were born. Sound creepy?

I’m talking about mold.

Mold is in the air you breathe, inside and out. You have co-existed with it your whole life.

You can’t eradicate it no matter how hard you try, not completely, unless you’re prepared to lead a hermetically sealed existence.

You would need a bio-sphere-like bubble for a house with a world-class filtration system. Ready to pay for all that? Would you live that way even if you could?

Okay. You can’t get rid of it or escape it. So here are the facts you need to be safe.

First, mold is everywhere. There is more outside than inside. With every breath you inhale more of it.

Second, trying to live mold-free is not only silly, but also unnecessary. After all, you’ve lived this long with the ubiquitous buggers.

Third, most common molds are black. You’ve seen black mold. In the refrigerator or inside an old trunk. Even outside. Nature is full of it.

Mold is not just inescapable. Without mold, a lot of us wouldn’t even be here. Those of us who are can appreciate how mold actually enriches our lives.

Drink beer? Thank you spores! Thou hast made the brew ferment. Eat bread? Praise be to mold, for making it rise to the occasion.

The celebrity mold known as Penicillium notatum has been wasting bacteria in our bodies since 1928, thanks to its discovery by Alexander Fleming. Penicillin has saved more lives and healed more illnesses than any other human-adapted substance ever.

During World War II the stuff was in such demand that it was routinely reused after it was filtered from the urine of patients who had ingested it.

So now you know. You and mold walk hand in spore.

Sometimes, in some environments it’s readily visible. If you journey to remote places, you may have seen more molds in a pristine wilderness than in your own attic. Once I spent nine days backpacking on Isle Royale.

I covered 55 miles without sight of a car, road, house, telephone, human being or any of the so-called comforts of home. The island is a national park accessible only by boat. For company I had the wolves whose tracks I saw fresh each morning. There was no sign of home anywhere.

Except one: mold. Everywhere. Underfoot. In the air. That’s life. That’s nature.

Back at home mold is with me still, and with you. Our heating and air conditioning systems screen at most a tiny fraction of it.

The only cause for concern is if mold concentrations in your home are abnormally high. Then you might have a problem.

The good news is, finding out is easy. You can administer a simple DIY test to measure mold levels. You just need a few minutes and a little curiosity.

As for the rest of your waking minutes, don’t even think about it. Mold is here to stay, and so far, so are you.
