CUMBERLAND — The NAILS Mission Project is accepting applications from homeowners for repairs to their properties to be completed over the summer.

NAILS completed work at 17 houses last summer with 94 volunteers who put in 3,760 hours on local repair projects and the work benefited 32 occupants.

Funding for the NAILS projects comes from a variety of sources, including the religious community, nonprofit organizations, businesses and individuals.

The organization receives support from the County United Way and grant funding comes from the state’s Community Development Block Grant program. The group also gets support from the Rotary Club of Cumberland, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local Union 1024, the CUW’s Day of Caring and Sharing and participation fees from volunteer work groups.

Repairs undertaken by NAILS range from painting to fixing porches and building handicapped-accessible ramps.

Individuals volunteer to help with logistics, moving groups to and from work sites and picking up materials for the jobs. Donations of tools and money for the projects also are accepted.

Volunteer workers come into the area for a week at a time from June through September.

Lou Van Hollen serves as president of the NAILS board of directors.

Homeowners who need help with home repairs or know somebody who does, may call 301-777-7134 for more information.
