Hiring a contractor for your home is not merely a technical decision. As the person will be part of structuring where you live and raise your family, it’s vital that you work with someone you trust, that is honest, that understands your needs, and that has your best interests in mind.

Licensed contractors are in no short supply, yet it is easy to go wrong in hiring one. Cutting corners, dishonesty, inattention to detail and a lack of care for what it is you really want in your home are common traits of the less-than-average contractors. So take a few simple steps to get the right person for the job.

First, get to know the contractor. Don’t hire off of paper, website, or Yellow-Pages info alone. Set up a meeting with the contractor, and talk with him about his past jobs, your construction needs, and future plans even.

Ask him for pictures of previous jobs. As with a blind date, follow your instinct. Does this person strike you as a trustworthy individual?

Remember what’s at stake, and the countless stories you’ve likely heard about improperly constructed homes and the troubles they bring.

Hiring someone you don’t trust, or discovering that you don’t trust the person you’ve hired, leads to discomfort with both parties. You will be constantly concerned about the contractor’s work, and the contractor will feel that you’re watching his or her every move.

So go with your instinct up front. If possible, talk with someone who has hired the contractor before. Don’t be afraid to tell him or her that you don’t think that they’re the right person for the job.

If you feel comfortable after the meeting, be sure to check his or her license number against the state records. Do so by going to the State’s Public Safety Department website or by calling directly.

Also be sure that their credentials are up-to-date. While some excellent contractors may have out of date licenses, if one of them is working for you and something goes wrong, the State won’t protect you, so protect yourself by checking up.

So when seeking a contractor, look for a credentialed and experienced individual, with a history of jobs that shows that they can work in your desired taste and style. But before you decide on which contractor is right for you, get to know them, and follow your gut.
