Some $54,000 that could have been used to repair the historic Wetherhill House in Dayton is gone, according to officials.
Township spokesman Ron Schmalz said Wednesday that about $54,000 saved from excess sponsorships from the community’s 1998 bicentennial celebration, specifically earmarked at the time to be used to maintain historic structures, was spent as part of last year’s municipal budget.
“We used the money in the 2010 budget,” Mr. Schmalz said.
Former Township Clerk and chairman of the bicentennial celebration Kathleen Thorpe went to the Township Council meeting last week to inquire if the money was still available.
Ms. Thorpe said the money was put into a special account and that she had kept tabs on it for a while.
She said the plan was for the money to be used to fix the upper floors of the historic home or even be used as a down payment for a bond to complete a major renovation on the property.
The reason, Ms. Thorpe said, she was bringing the issue up to the council was after she read news reports about repairs needed at the home.
Earlier this month, Acting Township Manager Raymond Hayducka told council members that the Wetherhill House and the Environmental Center on Old Road were both in need of repairs.
While the estimate on Wetherhill was around $20,000 to fix, the estimate for the Environmental Center came in at around $68,000.
Mr. Hayducka said people could still visit the Wetherhill property, but could not use the Environmental Center due to the water damage it had sustained.
Mayor Frank Gambatese said at that time that he wanted to move quickly to repair the Wetherhill House and that the issue should be sent to the town’s Historic Preservation Committee because special precautions would have to be made in order for the repairs to be done.
“This is the first time I’m hearing about this (money),” Mr. Gambatese said Sept. 13. “We will check this out.”
Mr. Schmalz said Wednesday that Chief Financial Officer Joe Monzo did check on the funds and found that they were used in last year’s budget.
