Jackson Community College Board OKs Wickwire House Repairs; More Work Needed on Presidential House

Jackson Community College trustees decided tonight by a 6-0 vote to repair the front stairs at the historic Wickwire House, with the JCC Foundation paying $25,000 of the estimated $30,000 cost.

But those aren’t the only repairs needed at the old house.

A building inspector identified other issues, including electrical problems, said Thomas Vainner, JCC’s vice president of finance and operations.

Electrical problems are being taken care of immediately and other needed repairs will go in a five-year plan, Vainner said. “Most of this will have to be done in the next couple of years, actually,” Vainner said.

Foundation and basement issues also are listed in a building inspector’s report. There are no cost estimates on repairs other than the front stairs, said JCC spokeswoman Cindy Allen.

The 19th century house at Wickwire and Browns Lake roads has served as the home of the college president since 1972. The house was donated to JCC by industrialist J. Sterling Wickwire.

Last month Vainner told board members the stairs were crumbling, forcing President Daniel Phelan to have to tell visitors to use a back entrance. Vainner mentioned other concerns about the old house, so trustees asked him for a complete list of potential repair issues.

The stairs, which are made of sandstone, will be repaired with a stamped cement finish, Vainner said. “This would maintain the historic view of the house,” Vainner said. “It’s cement, but it would look like stone.”
