Have you ever seen a home with porch columns and wondered if it were best for your home? If you are remodeling your home, there are all kinds of things you can do to it including adding columns. Columns can accentuate any home and porch.

When you see columns on the porch of a home, you may see them done in two different ways: standing alone or built into the railing. You don’t have to go with a basic design for your columns. Instead, there is a vast array of designs made of synthetic materials and wood that help to “invite” people into your home or business.

Do you want to add on columns to your porch? If so, then here are five popular column choices that can make your home or business stand out from the rest. They include:

- Corinthian
- Doric
- Egyptian
- Ionic
- Romanesque

Corinthian Style Columns

Do you want something modern on your home or business? If you are looking for a Greek design that has modern influences, then the Corinthian style columns are what you are after. Corinthian style columns also have been influenced from the Egyptians and their style.

How so? Look at the top of the column for the upturned bell-shape adornment. These designs are often in conjunction with acanthus, laurel and olive leaves decorations.

The Corinthian style column base is similar to another column called ionic. How is it alike? Both styles have a round base.

Doric Style Columns

If you are looking for a simple Greek style in your columns, then look no further than the columns of Doric style. Doric columns have an even, round top and fluted side with no split base. You may notice them as the kind of columns utilized for Parthenon.
Egyptian Style Columns

Ask some historians who are also interested in architecture and they will tell you that the Egyptian column design is shaped like the lotus flower. Why use the lotus flower? You can find the lotus flower near the Nile River so it’s probably true that this is where the design idea came from.

Why would Egyptians choose the lotus flower? Besides growing near the Nile River, the lotus flower is quite beautiful especially when it’s ornamented with palm leaves and its tops are tapered out.

Ionic Style Columns

Most people can recognize Ionic style columns by the scroll shaped decorations that are on the tops of them. Ionic style columns share similar base designs with Corinthian style columns: they are both round.

Romanesque Style Columns

Romanesque style columns became quite popular by architect Henry Hobson Richardson. He used the style to sustain arches on homes he had built. How do you know you are looking at a Romanesque style column?

These columns are square and short, resting on column bases, which happen to be big and trapezoid-shaped. There are times they may rest upon piers. Romanesque style columns are typically ornamented with flowers.

If you are serious about adding columns to your home or business and have started to research the kind you want, you’ll notice that they come in a vast array of sizes and shapes. Any column style you choose to add can accentuate your home, giving it tremendous character and look inviting to people. On top of that, you don’t have to pay a lot for the style you want.
