You’ve decided you want to build a fence. What do you need to do now that you’ve come up with idea? Actually, there are a few things you need to do.
First off, you need the fence layout including where you would like the gate or gates to be situated along the fence. Determine what kind of gate you’d like to have, whether it’ll be a double gate or single door gate. You’ll also need to know what kind of fence you’d like to have.
Begin with your Homeowners’ Association, if the area you live in as one set up. This association often has rules and regulations regarding the fences including the height, design, types and placement. After you know what you can and cannot do, you know what you’re limited to so you stick by the rules.
No doubt, it’s frustrating to plan everything you want out only to find out that’s not within the guidelines set forth by the Homeowners’ Association. Make sure that the Homeowners’ Association gets a copy of the plans you have in mind including the materials’ list. This way there are no complications down the road.
So you’ve got the Homeowners’ Association on board, what do you need to do now? Now you need to find your fence placement. Some HOAs will allow you to place the fence inside the property lines so that you can plant shrubs later on; others require the fence to be placed directly on the line.
Now you need to determine the gate placement since this is a contributing factor in fence layouts. Most people choose two single gates instead of one large gate. However, a double gate allows you to get bigger items into your yard such as a vehicle, boat, shed, swing set or other play set.
The reason that a double gate is so worthwhile is that it can act as a single gate and the second door will open only when you decide it will open. Always think about the entrance and exit of the gate when you’re wondering how to place the doors. Some may choose to have a double gate that’s close to the garage; others will have these gates at the back especially if they have a driveway or lot.
If you and your neighbor get along, you can always place a gate door for the both of you to access one another’s yards. Keep in mind that, should your neighbor sell the home, the new owner may not like the idea of you accessing their yard with your gate door.
After you’ve finished determining where to put the fence, it’s time to come up with a design. Most people tend to go with a wooden fence because they are so many design choices that a person can pick from. The majority of fence carpenters can create a unique fence design with wood so keep this in mind when you decide what fence type design you want.
You can also mix and match your fence design. If you want to know how a mixed fence design would like, consider finding images through the Internet to give you an idea. Before settling on a particular design, make sure it is the one you want.
Privacy should be another motivating factor in determining what kind of fence style you want. However, for safety’s sake, you may want to be able to see over the fence to your neighbor’s yard to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary. Find a fence style that allows you to do this.
After you’ve gotten your details and designs, it’s time to find contractors and get estimates. If you have any further questions, they’d be the ones to help you out.
