(PRICHARD, Ala.) – Gloria Howard worked for 30 years as a dispatcher for the city of Prichard, but she says the pension check is not enough to finish the repairs on her home. That’s where Volunteers of America stepped into to help.

“They’ve done everything: put my floors in, painted, put siding up,” Howard said. “I appreciate them very much for helping me in all the churches and everybody that’s helped I really appreciate it.”

The past few years have been rough for Howard. She lost her leg due to health troubles, and her husband died suddenly.

“Certainly, the prichard pension crisis was a disaster. And so, we’re just trying to find anyway we can help,” Volunteers of America spokesperson Paul McLendon said. “We were able to get a lot of volunteer groups, churches, several individual groups and individuals to come and repair and refurbish Mrs. Howard’s home.”

Many other Prichard pensioners also contributed to make repairs on the house.
