Investigators Watching for Home Repair Scams, Price Gouging Following Flood

Agents with the state Attorney General’s office are doing spot checks and going door-to-door in flood-affected areas checking for home repair scams or price gouging but, so far, haven’t found evidence of either happening, a spokesman said.

Agents are verifying home repair contractors are properly registered with the Attorney General and that they are providing homeowners with clear and accurate information about prices, down payments, start dates and end dates for projects.

However, people should still have their guards up and they should report suspicious activity, spokesman Nils Frederiksen said.

Fines for committing home repair scams are $1,000 per violation and $3,000 if a senior citizen is a victim. Fines can run as high as $10,000 for price gouging — defined as increasing the price of a product or service more than 20 percent above the average price the week before a declared emergency.

Consumers can report potential price-gouging or other consumer related scams by submitting an online consumer complaint at www.attorneygeneral.gov or by calling the office’s Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-441-2555.
