Kelvin Wiebe admits that it can be disturbing to watch him work on home improvement projects.
That’s why he wasn’t surprised to learn he was nominated as one of “America’s 10 Worst DIYers” (airing Oct. 6 at 9 p.m. on the DIY Network).
“It’s all done in good humor, I guess,” Wiebe of Chelmsford said of the show. “It’s kind of one of those things you can be infamous for. I think it’d be funny to have the title — I just wish there was a trophy or a plaque to go along with it.”
Wiebe and Jeff Autenrieth, a staffing recruiter from Worcester, are both finalists for the Worst DIYers — ambitious homeowners who took on more they could handle.
“I do plan on picking up a hammer again,” Wiebe said. “Although I did try to make my own wet saw over electrical wires, so maybe I shouldn’t be allowed to operate a circular saw.”
Wiebe and Autenrieth both submitted videos to the channel and were recruited by producers. Autenrieth’s video shows him moaning and groaning about his kitchen remodeling project and eventually giving up.
“I don’t necessarily think I’m that bad at projects,” Autenrieth said.
“The one caveat I take away is that I don’t do projects with my wife, and I don’t know any sane person who does. It’s a recipe for disaster.”
Viewers can decide who deserves the title of “Worst DIYer” by watching each nominee’s clip and voting at DIYnetwork.com.
The idea of “winning” an unscripted show by being named the worst at something is still a strange thought to both men.
“I don’t think I’ve processed it enough,” Autenrieth said. “But I don’t think we’re the worst. We just took on too much. I took a project way out of scope of what we should do.”
Wiebe, on the other hand, sees some humor in the prospect of being named worst DIYer – especially since he works with tools for a living.
“I’m an aircraft mechanic in Bedford,” he said. “It’s weird, I always thought of myself as being good with tools.”
