A driver who struck a utility pole and a house at 2026 Plainfield in Norton Shores fell asleep at the wheel, police said.
No one was injured in the collision, which happened at about 4 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Plainfield and McCracken.
Norton Shores Police Cpl. Matt Rhyndress said a young man fell asleep while driving northbound on McCracken and drove into the parking lot of St. Francis de Sales church, 2929 McCracken.
The young man, who was driving a silver 1999 Ford Taurus, struck a 2011 Jeep Patriot, “panicked” and struck the power pole and house, which is across the street from the parking lot, Rhyndress said.
Rhyndress said the young man was cited for civil infractions, but declined to specify what the infractions were.
Workers from Consumers Energy arrived at about 4:20 p.m. to repair the downed power lines.
Jim Bird, who lives two houses down from the home that was struck, said the driver was his son, Kevin Bird. Kevin Bird, 20, had left at about 3:30 p.m. to go to Wal-Mart, Jim Bird said.
Jim Bird said he was watching a football game when the power went out from the pole being struck. A neighbor saw the accident and told him, he said.
Kevin Bird had seemed all right when he left, Jim Bird said, but had been working third shift recently.
Shelly Plaunt, who rents the house at 2026 Plainfield, said she was inside the bedroom of the house at the time of the accident.
“I thought it sounded like an earthquake,” she said.
She went out to see if her cats had knocked over some furniture and saw cracks in the wall facing the street, she said. She heard bystanders calling 911 and went out to try to calm the driver.
Plaunt said she was told the house was uninhabitable for the time being. Emergency personnel shut off the house’s gas line at about 4:50 p.m. and called someone to board up the hole in the house’s front, she said.
“The house shifted, so I cannot open the back door to my house now,” she said.
Homeowner Michael Varela said the house is insured.
“It’s an unfortunate situation,” he said. “I’m just glad no one got hurt.”
