PITTSBURGH — Hill District resident Odessa Wilson has gone from having one of the worst holiday seasons in her 82 years to quite possibly the best, thanks to the generosity of a local contractor.”Thank you, so much. I feel a lot better, and I can rest a little better,” said Wilson.An estimated $13,000 in damages was caused to Wilson’s Centre Avenue home when a car smashed through a brick wall and into her kitchen. The 23-year-old driver was charged with DUI and reckless driving.Wilson, who canceled her homeowner’s insurance in August to pay for her utilities, was left with nowhere to turn.That was until Wilkinsburg contractor Paul Woods agreed to fully repair Wilson’s house for only the cost of materials.”He took one look at this here, and he said, ‘I can do this,’ and he started the same day,” said Wilson’s neighbor, Bill Foster.Foster said Wilson volunteered to replace Wilson’s wall, kitchen and install a new window.Cuccaro Plumbing, of Homewood, also offered to install a new sink.”We have a lot in stock that we are willing to donate to her. I mean, it’s a time of need. She doesn’t have anything. She’s a widow. She doesn’t have the money, and it’s cold out. She needs that stuff,” said Ali Cuccaro.Wilson said she also received Christmas cards — some containing donations — from strangers who were touched by her story.”I’d love to tell each and every one that I really appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. I’m not just talking. I really mean it,” said Wilson.Wilson said she’ll spend Christmas with her goddaughter before returning to her newly repaired home of 42 years.
