HOPATCONG — A cable repair man entering the basement of a home in Hopatcong Wednesday afternoon encountered a 500-pound bear, according to a report on MyFoxNY.com.

After the man fled the bear left the basement. Authorities used a tranquilizer dart to subdue the bear, who stumbled around the neighborhood before it collapsed.

The bear planned to hibernate in the basement of the house on Madison Trail for the winter, the report said.

Hunters killed 464 bears in this year’s six-day hunt, which ended Saturday.
