Frozen water pipes in the winter time can cause plumbing to burst and flood when it thaws out. Even if your plumbing is in tip top shape, this will not matter much if your pipes are not insulated properly against freezing temperatures. Pipe insulation is relatively inexpensive and can be done by most homeowners if they want to do it themselves.

Basement flooding can be caused by plumbing issues, but also from other things. Poor landscaping or cracks in the foundation can allow water to seep in and even flood too. It will make your basement smell musty and often causes mold to develop.

Natural disaster flooding is usually not something that a homeowner can do anything about, it just happens and you have no control over it. The best thing to do for natural disaster flooding is to be prepared with the proper insurance in case it ever happens.
