Chimney Repair?

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites

The Home Improvement company (VP of credit union second job) has workmen’s comp and insurance, no contractor’s license and not sure if she needs to be bonded (in her opinion). Should her company have a contractor’s license and be bonded to do the work. Only has vendor’s license for 2 years. Where can I found out info. We live in Dayton, Ohio. Really need work done and don’t want to get burned. She does use contracted workers to do the job. Thanks,
we need to have the chimney repaired. So that we don’t get sued or have shoddy work done, should the company be bonded and have a contractor’s license to do the work. They have insurance and workmen’s comp.

The owner of the property can do whatever they want to their building, without any permits. It’s only when you bring in contractors that you have to worry about permits, etc. But you’re question is sort of vague, what exactly do you want to know? No,if the company has their own insurance and workers comp. you don’t have to be bonded. But I would check their references, and ask to see pictures of their work.I’m a builder, and I personally take alot of pride in my work, but a lot of contractors are solely in the business for the money. And,no,they don’t need a contractors license to do chimney repair as long as the owner of the property o.k.’s it.

I’d think for a simple chimney repair you wouldn’t need a permit, the only thing I’d ensure is that the company has full insurance on their employees, in the off-chance someone falls off of the roof so they won’t try and sue for damages.

Most residential model codes consider cleaning a MAINTENANCE item and do not require a permit. Some permitting offices do want it premitted though because it can be a life safety issue. Check with them.

Bonded- I would not worry about being bonded but I would get certificates of General Liability Insurance, Automobile insurance, and work comp. Don;t let them just say they have it. Have them provide the certificates of coverage from their agent. The agent will send it directly to you via fax or will fax it to the Contractor with your name as the certificate holder.

Get that coverage…. forget the bonding…

I’d contact the Homebuilders Association which is located off Dryden Rd. Don’t haave the phone # handy, but they could answer your question definitively and probably refer you to a reputable contractor at the same time.
