Can a Renter Take Items They’ve Installed in an Apartment When They Leave?

FavoriteLoadingAdd to favorites

Since I moved into my apartment seven years ago (oral lease, in CT), I have made countless repairs and home improvements at my own expense. When I move out (after a dispute with the landlord), can I uninstall items I’ve installed and take them with me? i.e., flooring, a new ceiling after the old one collapsed, a refrigerator, a gas heater, etc.

your going to take a new ceiling with you? what are you going to do with it? lol. Anyway, usually when you move out of a house you have to put it back to its original condition, so if it came with flooring, you need to leave it with flooring. But in england, all that happens if you dont do this is you lose your deposit. So if thats all that would happen to you then why not, if your stuff is worth more than the security deposit, or if you dont plan on getting it back anyway. If your landlord wouldnt fix any of that stuff for you then why should he get what you replaced? If you have proof that you replaced them all because he wouldnt I dont think there should be too much of a problem for you.

You probably should leave the flooring and ceiling, not rally much chance you could use them anyhow. As to the refridge and gas heater (this is a plug in heater, right). Yeah, go ahead – they are yours, you bought them.

NOPE Anything Attached Stays. You can take the Fridge and gas heating

  4. Landlord says:

No, anything installed attaches to the deed and stays, if you take it he can have you arrested for theft. If you steal more then $300 worth it is a felony.

The flooring, ceiling, heater, basically anything screwed, nailed or blued to the house has to stay. If the refrigerator is the pull out type and not installed you can take it. However, if there was one there when you got there one has to be there when you leave.

Not unless you are prepared to re-install the old flooring, the old ceiling, the old fridge, the gas heater, etc.

Read your lease. If there was a fridge and gas heater in the rental unit when you moved in, you have to put it back unless you want the landlord to charge you for it.

Appliances that you purchased, yes. All other improvements, if removed, would leave the apt in “disrepair” and you would be charged the cost of restoring the unit “original condition”.

You can take the refrigerator and the gas heater, but if you bought them to replace his broken ones you best have a receipt or it will be his word against yours. You can not rip out flooring or ceilings
